About

From the moment we are born we use our hands in order to see, we go on to make marks on paper for the sheer pleasure of doing so, we draw what is on our minds and before our eyes, we draw to think and to understand the world around us.

Eye to Hand is an observational drawing course taught by award-winning contemporary artist Genevieve Swifte. Drawing on her PhD research, the course explores the relationship between the eye and the hand to integrate and develop perceptual and motor skills through traditional and contemporary approaches to mark-making.

Allowing participants to explore and take risks, Eye to Hand creates opportunities for those new to creative practice to work alongside experienced practitioners in a safe and inclusive environment. Critiques are exchanged with opportunities to reflect on our discoveries and the workshop embraces and supports the diverse sensibilities of the class as a whole.

Based in the creative heart of Canberra at the historic Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres, classes run throughout the year on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings. Scheduled in blocks of six-week duration, Eye to Hand is complimented by weekend intensives held in various locations around Canberra.

The workshop welcomes young artists from thirteen years of age, creative professionals, complete beginners and people with all levels of ability. Members of the community who have not had the opportunity to engage in formal art training are especially welcome to attend.
